Suzanne Moomaw

Suzanne Morse Moomaw, an accomplished professional, serves as Associate Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the School of Architecture. Additionally, she holds the positions of Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Community Design Research Center. Prior to joining the University of Virginia (UVA), she had a significant role as President at the Pew Partnership for Civic Change and as Director of Programs at the Kettering Foundation.

Suzanne Moomaw's research focus revolves around re-imagining the necessary interventions to stimulate regenerative strategies in urban, peri-urban, and rural post-industrial cities. She is a prolific author with two upcoming books, 'Cities Without Work: The Long Road from Boom to Bust' to be published by Harvard University Press in 2019, and 'Bittersweet: Extant Sugar Towns and the New Cuba' to be released by the University of Virginia Press in 2020. Additionally, she has authored 'Smart Communities: How Citizens and Local Leaders Can Build a Brighter Future' with editions published in 2004 and 2010 by Jossey-Bass.

Apart from her academic roles, Suzanne Moomaw is actively engaged in various organizations and foundations. She serves as a Trustee of the Kettering Foundation and has been associated with esteemed institutions like the JFK and LBJ Presidential Libraries, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, Academy for Community Engagement Scholarship, Virginia Humanities, and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities.

In recognition of her exceptional teaching abilities, Suzanne Moomaw received the All-University Teaching Award in 2015 and the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association in 2017. Her commitment to education and her contributions to the field of urban and environmental planning make her a respected figure in her domain.
